Shock and Awe – Retirees Need $376,000 for Future Health Bills!

By Phyllis Staff, Ph.D. | June 12, 2008

Operations can destroy a retirement plan.

From a June 2008 CNN Money article comes this startling announcement:

“Retirees Need Up to $376,000 to Pay Future Health Bills.”

For lucky Americans, $376,000 is only part of the amount they have socked away to pay for their retirement. For others, the amount is laughable. Stuck somewhere in the expensive stew of educational expenses for their children, care for aging parents, and escalating food, fuel, and mortgage costs, saving an extra $400,000 doesn’t figure realistically in their planning. No wonder, more and more turn to self-care and alternative health care.

Now, as never before, health care is a “do-it-yourself” project. And, although taking responsibility for their health is fearful for some, learning a new way of health care creates payoffs far beyond those advanced by the current health care system.

New health care means taking individual responsibility for health rather than relying on pills from the bloated pharmaceutical industry. And that’s both scary and liberating.

Journey to the New Health Care

My own journey to the new health care began in 1991 when my last dose of antibiotic made me extremely ill. At the time, my decision to change was not a matter of money – health care was still very affordable. It was a matter of my personal safety. My choice was sometimes uncomfortable, but I stuck with it.

I looked for and found alternatives that were safe and effective. They exist. Even better, I began to learn how to avoid the need for remedies. When problems did arise, I learned to create conditions that would encourage my own healing processes. Isn’t that what good health providers try to do?

Of course, if I break a bone or need other kinds of specialized help, I will consult a traditional physician. They can do things I can’t do for myself, so I’m not saying never. But, I’ve got other plans for $376,000 – a trip to the Galapagos, a greenhouse large enough for a prom, food and education for starving children.

How about you? Is it worth taking a chance on yourself? Are you ready to choose dreams over expensive nightmares?
