“W” is for Watermelon

A picnic favorite that means summertime to many, who would have guessed that watermelon is a nutrition powerhouse? I just came across a new article from Texas A & M that lists some of the phytonutrients found in watermelon.  Turns out, this delicious summer treat is also great for relaxing blood vessels and, thus, reducing blood pressure.

According to A & M researchers,”in watermelons, these [phytonutrients] include lycopene, beta carotene and the rising star among its phyto-nutrients – citrulline – whose beneficial functions are now being unraveled. Among them is the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

Scientists know that when watermelon is consumed, citrulline is converted to arginine through certain enzymes. Arginine is an amino acid that works wonders on the heart and circulation system and maintains a good immune system.”

So, in addition to being delicious, watermelon is a terrifc source of vitamins and phytonutrients.  That’s good news for everyone who wants to prevent dementia because high blood pressure is a risk factor for dementia.  Lowering blood pressure and strengthening the immune system reduces that risk.
